On the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the "Yellow River Cantata" premiere and the 75th anniversary of its Canadian debut, the NeoVoce Philharmonic Choir will host a commemoration concert in Toronto. The cantata will once again resonate in Toronto’s music halls. Conductor: Leo Li (Director and Chair of the Member Committee of the Canadian Choral Association, Artistic Director and Conductor of NeoVoce Philharmonic Choir)
Dr. Leo Li (abd), Choral Canada on board director, Chair of Choral Canada Membership Committee, Member of Juried Program Committee, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award recipient, choral and orchestral conductor.
His journey as a conductor commenced officially at the age of 18, where he led a choir to victory with a Gold Prize at the Czech International Music Festival. Currently he holds his Ph.D. Candidate status at the University of Toronto, Canada.
Dr. Li (abd) possesses extensive experience in the realm of conducting. His expertise extends across diverse music ensembles, ranging from mixed choirs, equal-voice choirs, and vocal ensembles, etc. Additionally, he has showcased his conducting prowess with symphony orchestras.
Dr. Li (abd)’s influence in the conducting sphere transcends borders, as he has conducted and performed in various countries spanning four continents.
At the end of 2022, Dr. Li (abd) accepted NeoVoce Philharmonic Choir’s invitation as the conductor and staged their inaugural choral concert in downtown Toronto in 2023. In 2023~2024 music season, Dr. Li (abd) has been appointed as the Artistic Director and Conductor of NeoVoce Philharmonic Choir and NeoVoce Philharmonic Quartet.
NeoVoce Philharmonic Choir
NeoVoce Philharmonic Choir was officially registered as a Canadian federal non-profit choral arts organization in 2023. The choir adheres to the philosophy of "strictly demanding professionalism from itself and treating the audience with a professional choral attitude," with a repertoire that includes both Western classical and contemporary choral works from East and West, encompassing a wide range of languages. Since 2020, the choir has undergone systematic and rigorous choral training under the guidance of Artistic Director and Conductor Leo Li and has participated in numerous large public performances in cities and communities. In 2022, the choir participated in the Canadian Choral Conference’s "Podium" — public rehearsals; in 2023 and 2024, it successfully held the “Hearing the East” concert; in 2024, the choir won a silver medal and Peace & Friendship Award at the 17th China International Choral Festival. Additionally, the choir has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in the United States in 2025.
Tsinghua Alumni Performing Arts Group
Tsinghua Alumni Performing Arts Group was established at the end of 2008, primarily consisting of Tsinghua alumni. This non-profit arts organization is dedicated to serving alumni, the Chinese community, and society at large. Under the leadership of Group Leader Cai Hongmei, the choir has performed nearly 100 times over the past 15 years, including Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony “Ode to Joy,” a thousand-person sacred choral performance at Roy Thomson Hall, China’s first choral cantata "The Song of Everlasting Sorrow," and a peace song for the 70th anniversary of the victory in the Anti-Japanese War. The group has won silver and bronze medal at the Golden Maple International Choral Festival
Greater Toronto Philharmonic Orchestra
Conceived in Spring 2007, the Greater Toronto Philharmonic Orchestra (GTPO) holds a unique position in Toronto and region amongst other orchestras. GTPO serves a very broad geographic community in the City of Toronto, with performances at multiple facilities in communities throughout the GTA and is a trusted partner for small community arts groups looking for presentation partners and a supportive showcase for youthful, talented performers.
Community organizations, choirs, festivals and concert series have sought out partnership with GTPO to add value to their work. GTPO has performed concerts in some of Toronto’s most prestigious concert venues such as Glenn Gould Studio CBC, George Weston Hall, Isabel Bader Theater, Mel Lastman square, as well as the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts, Markham Flato Theatre, Mississauga Living Arts Centre and River Run Centre in Guelph.
Renowned Canadian guest artists who have performed with the GTPO include: Juno Award artists Emily D'Angelo mezzo-soprano, Robert Michaels guitar/vocal, Michael Bridge accordion, Kornel Wolak clarinet, Jeffrey McFadden guitar, Viva Trio.
The GTPO is unique in its commitment to bringing full orchestral performances to areas of the City that are currently under-served working together with groups rooted in those communities to expand the availability of public performance opportunities. GTPO has performed outreach and special concerts in various venues and places, such as: Columbus Centre, Armenian Cultural Centre (North York), Mimico Square (South Etobicoke), St. Philips Church (North Etobicoke), Lawrence Park Community Church (Lawrence & Bayview), Liberty Village (downtown Toronto).
P.E.N Art Academy
P.E.N Art Academy is the only educational institution in Oakville, Ontario that can issue Ontario high school credits and diplomas. Since its founding in 2020, the academy has been committed to developing children's and young students' education in music, art, and technology, as well as creating specialized curricula. In particular, the academy has achieved remarkable success in music education. It offers a range of instruction, from classical to modern music theory and instrument teaching, while adhering to the traditional one-on-one music training model. At the same time, it promotes ensemble and band courses, which are highly favored by both parents and students. These offerings reflect the founders’ and teachers’ extensive professional experience and careful planning of academic content.
P.E.N Art Academy currently has 22 artists from the Greater Toronto Area and other countries, including Italy, Hungary, Colombia, Russia, China, and South Korea, teaching at the school. Over 80% of the faculty hold master’s degrees or higher. Each year, the academy’s students participate in district, city, provincial, and national competitions and music festivals, winning numerous gold and silver medals.
