Artistic Director and Conductor: Leo Li
Dr. Leo Li (abd), Choral Canada on board director, Chair of Choral Canada Membership Committee, Member of Juried Program Committee, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award recipient, choral and orchestral conductor.
His journey as a conductor commenced officially at the age of 18, where he led a choir to victory with a Gold Prize at the Czech International Music Festival. Currently he holds his Ph.D. Candidate status at the University of Toronto, Canada.
Dr. Li (abd) possesses extensive experience in the realm of conducting. His expertise extends across diverse music ensembles, ranging from mixed choirs, equal-voice choirs, and vocal ensembles, etc. Additionally, he has showcased his conducting prowess with symphony orchestras.
Dr. Li (abd)’s influence in the conducting sphere transcends borders, as he has conducted and performed in various countries spanning four continents.
At the end of 2022, Dr. Li (abd) accepted NeoVoce Philharmonic Choir’s invitation as the conductor and staged their inaugural choral concert in downtown Toronto in 2023. In 2023~2024 music season, Dr. Li (abd) has been appointed as the Artistic Director and Conductor of NeoVoce Philharmonic Choir and NeoVoce Philharmonic Quartet.
Concertmaster: Sue Christensen
Sue Christensen arrived in Toronto from the UK, where she honed her skills as a violinist. With a rich background as a freelance performer and educator of both violin and viola, Sue has graced numerous professional orchestras and concert venues throughout the UK, particularly in London and Kent. Since joining the GTPO in 2011, she has become a cornerstone of the orchestra, bringing extensive experience with orchestral repertoire and leading the ensemble in many memorable performances.
Soprano:Yan Huang
Studied under Professor Chen Yanfang of Music Department of Xiamen University, Professor Zhan Shihua of Music Department of Jimei University, and Professor Guo Lingbi of Acoustic Song Department of China Conservatory of Music. She has been engaged in music teaching for many years and has rich experience in singing performance and teaching. She has participated in many competitions, and won the silver Medal of National Excellent Singer Competition, the Gold Medal of Fujian Singer Competition, and the Gold Medal and Silver medal of the 5th (Graz, Austria) World Chorus Competition. Also She has visited Southeast Asia, South Asia, Europe and other countries for cultural exchange activities.
Baritone Hong Tang
Mr. Hong Tang graduated from Tsinghua University,
currently serving as Bass lead of the Tsinghua Alumni Choir
in South Ontario. He has been passionate about choral arts
for decades, actively participating in numerous choral
activities including: Global Chinese Music Concert at China
National Grand Theatre in 2014; As lead singer at Tsinghua
University's (Arr.) "The Yellow River Cantata" in 2015;
Performance in "The Yellow River Cantata" conducted by Jia
Lǚ at China National Grand Theatre, in cooperation with its
orchestra.
Male Duet : Jason Peng
Vice President of Novo Philharmonic Choir
Mr. Jason Peng, MBA, works in Accounting Section of a
large multinational corporation. He is passionate about
music, serving as the Vice President of NeoVoce
Philharmonic Choir. His achievements include: Winning the
second place in the "Youth-China-Dream” all-age talents
competition on TV in Canada region in 2019; Winner of
Gold Award in the Water Cube Cup Singer Competition in
Toronto in 2021; One of the top ten contestants in the third
China national singing competition of "I Sing Teresa Teng"
held in 2022.
Male Duet : BaoSong Li
Graduated from Tsinghua University in 1985, has had a passion for singing since childhood. Although he initially considered pursuing a career in the arts, he chose to attend Tsinghua University. For over a decade, he has been involved with the Tsinghua Alumni Choir in Toronto, where he currently serves as the tenor section leader. He has participated in several large-scale music concerts in Toronto as a lead tenor and frequently takes part in vocal concerts organized by various Chinese music groups. He has also won the "Best Voice Award" in the Toronto division of the CCTV "Water Cube" vocal competition.
Reciter: Zhang Jiping
Zhang Jiping is a professional voice actor born into a Beijing opera family. In 1974, he began working in voice acting at the Shao Brothers Film Company. In 1991, he joined Hong Kong Television Broadcasts Limited as a voice director and provided voices for several renowned actors such as Tony Leung and Louis Koo. With over forty years in the voice acting industry, Zhang has worked on more than ten thousand film and television productions. Although many may not have seen him, they have certainly heard his voice, as he provided the dubbing for classic films like "A Better Tomorrow," "The Killer," and "The Drug War," voicing stars such as Chow Yun-fat and Jackie Chan. Additionally, he has dubbed several well-known TV dramas, including "The Legend of the Condor Heroes" and "The Bund." Besides voice acting, Zhang is also highly skilled in classical Chinese studies, calligraphy, and Chinese drama, and he is a distinguished baritone singer. He has won six championships in Hong Kong's song contests.
Reciter: Zhang RuiHeng
Feng Yun (Zhang Ruiheng) is originally from Shandong and graduated from Shandong University of Technology with a major in Automatic Control, followed by a master’s degree in Information Engineering. He is a senior software development and testing engineer and a seasoned amateur recitation and singing enthusiast. He founded "Feng Yun Recitation Garden" and has organized a series of online recitation competitions over the years. He has been invited as a mentor and judge for various recitation contests and has participated in performances with several choirs and arts groups. Currently, he is a host on multiple online platforms and is active on the Chinese community stage and online recitation and singing platforms in Canada.
LuYao holds a Master of Music degree from Michigan State University, majoring in Piano Pedagogy under the guidance of Professor Deborah Moriarty, Chair of the Piano Department, and Georgian pianist Tamar Mikeladze. She also earned a Master of Education degree from the University of Toronto in Canada, specializing in Developmental Educational Psychology.
She has frequently served as a piano accompanist and artistic director for various artistic groups and choirs in China and North America, including top Chinese ensembles such as the Shanghai Little Star Choir and the Michigan State University Choral Union. Currently, she is the collaborative pianist and piano artistic director for the Neovoce Philharmonic Choir in Canada.
Her awards include the Gold Medal in the Piano Category at the "Charming Hong Kong" Asian Youth Arts Festival and the First Prize in the Piano Category at the Shanghai Art Teacher Skills Competition.
Pipa: Bella Huang
Bella Huang graduated with a master's degree from the Department of Music at Beijing Normal University, where she majored in pipa (a traditional Chinese lute). She began learning the pipa at the age of six, studying under Professor Li Guanghua at the Central Conservatory of Music and Professor Meng Zhongfang at Tianjin Conservatory of Music. During her secondary school years, she was a key pipa player for the Beijing Golden Sail Folk Music Troupe, participating in numerous major performances, including representing the troupe in France. After enrolling at Beijing Normal University, she studied under Professor Gao Wei.
Sanxian: Xu, Dexiong
Xu, Dexiong enjoys and excels at playing plucked string instruments in traditional Chinese music. He has served as a musician providing accompaniment on the sanxian (a three-stringed plucked instrument) at various organizations, including the Toronto National Opera Society, the Qunle Tea House, the Toronto Xiangsheng Happy Gathering, and the Toronto Longsheng Peking Opera Troupe.
Sanxian: Zhu, Hongda
Zhu Hongda learned the folk art of Sanxian and folk accompaniment from Teacher Li Guangfu of the Heilongjiang Folk Art Troupe. Later, he studied Beijing Yun Dagu under Teacher Sun Kaicheng of the Tianjin Folk Art Troupe.
Contabass: Yang, Jingru
Yang Jingru is the principal contrabass of the Shaanxi Symphony Orchestra and a national first-class performer. She is also a member of the Shaanxi Basic Education Aesthetic Education Special Committee. She has won multiple awards in important competitions both within the province and nationally. In 2013, she was invited to perform in France; in 2014, she recorded the album In That Distant Place, which was published and distributed by China Record Corporation. In 2019, she was invited to perform in Zurich, Switzerland, at the Tonhalle and in Vienna, Austria, at the Golden Hall, receiving high praise. In December 2020, she participated in the global broadcast of the “24-Hour International Celebration” organized by the American Classical Cultural Revival Foundation to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.
Currently studying music education at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music, majoring in classical piano. She will serve as the piano accompanist for the NeoVoce Philharmonic Choir during the 2024-2025 music season.
She holds an RCM Piano Performance Certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada, a Level 9 Pipa Certificate from the Central Conservatory of Music, and a Level 10 Hulusi Certificate.
She began learning piano and the hulusi at age six and joined the school traditional orchestra to play the pipa at age nine. She is currently studying the cello, flute, and trumpet.
Specializing in instrumental performance, she has extensive performance experience. In September 2019, she was invited to perform for a charity organization in Buffalo, USA. In 2020, she participated in the CIMC-MOMA 2020 Canadian International Music Competition, winning first place in both the Pipa and Ensemble categories. Between 2020 and 2023, she was invited multiple times to perform at multicultural festivals across Canada. In September 2021, she performed on the pipa at the inauguration of Federal Cabinet Minister Anita Anand at the Oakville Parliament. In June 2023, she performed at the Toronto Centre Island Dragon Boat Race, promoting Chinese folk music and receiving high praise.
Violin: George Liu
He began learning piano at the age of four and started studying violin at seven. He is currently the violin accompanist for an adult church choir. He has participated in numerous local and international piano competitions, earning numerous awards and scholarships. After completing his Grade 10 piano course at age 13, he advanced to performance-level studies. In 2023, he passed the Grade 10 violin exam with excellent results.
Currently a 12th-grade student at a high school in Mississauga, he is the first violinist in the school band. Last year, his band won a gold medal at a national competition, and in April of this year, they earned a silver medal at an international competition in the United States.
George is also passionate about composition. He composed the entire score for a student film written, directed, and performed by his classmates, and played the violin parts in the film. At this year's National Theatre School Drama Festival in Canada, George won the "Outstanding Music Composition Award."
Violin: YangYue Xu
Yang Yue Xu began learning the violin at the age of 5, studying under Zheng Zhonghe, the former principal violinist of the Shanghai Light Music Orchestra. She obtained the ARCT certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada and has taught violin at several music schools. Additionally, she has participated in various small-scale artistic performances.
Host: Zhou, Jing
Zhou, Jing (broadcast name: Xiao Zhou) is a voice actor at the Central Television Drama Production Center. She has participated in evening talk shows on Beijing Television and has worked as a news anchor and host at Beijing People's Broadcasting Station, covering news, education, lifestyle, and sports channels. She has won awards for programs such as "Eden" and "Life, Birth, Living." Zhou Jing has hosted numerous major events in China and has served as a host for various cultural activities in the Greater Toronto Area, including Mid-Autumn Festival and Spring Festival galas.
Host: Charles Chen
Charles Chen moved to Canada at the age of 7 and grew up in a bilingual environment, becoming fluent in both English and Chinese. He has served as the president of the Mississauga Junior Chamber of Commerce and is currently a committee member of the Mississauga Chinese Chamber of Commerce. Since 2017, he has been the host of the Mississauga Police and Community Fun Day and frequently hosts various chamber events, banquets, and weddings. His fluent switching between Chinese and English, along with his upbeat and positive style, leaves a lasting impression with his excellent image.
